1. Post-doc position
Santa Barbara, CA—The Institute for Social, Behavioral, and Economic
Research (ISBER) seeks a postdoctoral scholar to contribute to the
development of interactive online tools for communicating the results of
sustainability research to the public. Work to be performed will advance
the state of the art in policy applications of environmental research.
Researchers at ISBER completed a life cycle assessment (LCA) of used
lubricating oil management in California for the Department of Resources
Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) to support recent legislation. In a
subsequent project, the researchers will produce an interactive web
application to interpret study results with improved accessibility and
transparency, assess sensitivity to input parameters, and enable policy
makers to easily update the model as new data become available. Academic
research to support the project is anticipated to lead to methodological
advances in LCA, including the use of open data.
The postdoctoral scholar will work directly with the PI and California
state policy makers to design and implement the tool. Candidates must
possess a PhD or equivalent and relevant experience in a field related
to sustainability science, industrial ecology, human-computer
interaction, or data management; demonstrated experience developing web
or database applications; interest in policy applications of
sustainability research; professional communication skills. Familiarity
with life cycle assessment methodology (ISO 14044) is highly desirable.
Concrete experience with Microsoft SQL Server, C# programming language,
programming or web development experience is valuable.
The position will offer considerable opportunity to advance the career
of an academic researcher interested in sustainability science and
policy through interaction with faculty at the Bren School of
Environmental Science and Management. Position is for one year,
beginning as soon as possible. PI will work with the postdoc to secure
additional research funding if desired.
ISBER is located on the beautiful campus of the University of
